Guide: Change Default Downloads Folder in MacBook

I’ve found that keeping my downloaded files clean up and organized is much easier when I download them to my desktop, which I constantly look at and then to download to the download folder that I don’t pay attention to until it gets too cluttered to find anything.

If you’re using the same browser as your friends, it’s good to know that you can change where Safari, Firefox, and Chrome place their downloads. ..

If you’re like most people, your default download folder on your Mac is probably the Downloads folder. But what if you want to change it? There are a few ways to do this, and today we’ll discuss two of them. The first way is to use the Finder’s “Go” menu. Under “File,” click on “Go.” In the dialog box that appears, click on the “Downloads” folder. If it’s not already selected, it will be. Click on the “Change” button and select your new download folder. The second way is to use Terminal. Open Terminal by pressing Command+Space and type Terminal into the search bar at the top of the window. When Terminal appears, type in these commands: cd ~/Downloads mkdir mynewfolder ..

To change the default download folder in the three major Mac browsers, you can use the following steps:

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Click on the wrench icon in the top left corner of Safari.
  3. Choose Preferences… from the menu bar.
  4. Scroll down to Downloads and click on the Change Download Folder button.

Change the default download location in Safari

To open Safari and change its preferences, open the Safari app and then the Safari drop-down menu in the top left corner of your screen. Choose from the drop-down list Preferences. After the Preferences window opens, make sure you select General tab. On the General tab, you can change the “File download location” switch to any location you want. If you’re feeling really fancy, you can instead change the toggle shown in my second screenshot above to “Ask for any download,” which means you can archive anything you download right where you want it, any time again.

Change the default download location in Firefox

If you want to save files to a different location, you can do so by clicking on the “Choose” button on the right and then selecting the desired folder from the list.

Change the default download location in Chrome

Google has made it more difficult to change your default download folder in the Chrome browser, but the steps start the same way as the other two browsers. Launch the Chrome application first and then click on it Chrome menu at the top of your screen and select Preferences from the Chrome drop-down menu. Scroll down the “Settings” tab until you see “Show advanced settings” and click on it. When those advanced settings appear, you have to scroll a bit further to get to the “Download Location” option.

You can use the “Modify” button to change the default download location for files in Safari and Firefox. There is also a choice to have the browser ask you where to put the file each time it downloads it. As Steve Jobs used to say, “Oh yeah, there’s one more thing.” ..

Mail also uses the Downloads folder to store attachments you save, so if you really want to be thorough, you can change that too.

You can now control the download location of your email and web browsers just like you do with the web browsers. This makes it easier to get things done, as you know your Downloads folder will never get cluttered and disorganized again.

If you are a Mac user and are having trouble with your DNS, there is a way to flush it in Mac Mojave. ..
