Guide: Customize Firefox Scrollbar: Tips and Tutorial
The Firefox scroll bar on the right side of your page is something you can’t customize much with the browser options. However, with a few add-ons you can transform the scroll bar. NewScrollbars, Yet another smooth scrolling and Scroll up are three add-ons that allow you to refresh the Firefox scroll bar.
Customize the Firefox scrollbar with NewScrollbars
To add NewScrollbars to Firefox, open the Add-ons window and click on the New Scrollbars icon. In the window that opens, select the desired color of scroll bars and click on OK.
Now, on the window’s main pane, select the radio button to open a new window with the predefined scroll bars. Then click the Predefined Scroll Bars drop-down menu to open a list of scroll bar color schemes to choose from. Select one from there to add the new color scheme to the scroll bar as shown below.
To change the color of the slider, click the Customizable Sliders v1 (Noia style) box and then click the color palette. You can then choose several alternative colors for the slider. ..
Just below that color palette is a text box that allows you to adjust the width of the scroll bar. Enter a value in that box to adjust the width of the bar. For example, entering a higher value there increases the width of the scroll bar, as shown in the snapshot directly below. ..
To adjust the scroll bars without the Noia style, click the Customizable v2 option. That will change the slider to something like the screenshot directly below. Then you can further customize the slider with the customizable sliders v2 settings.
There are a variety of color options to choose from under the customizable sliders v2 settings. You can, for example, select alternative colors for the scroll bar button by pressing it Button color palette box. Click the Background Colors palette to choose a new color for the bar background. There are also Thumb (Hover) and Button (Hover) palettes that allow you to change the colors of the slider slider and buttons when the cursor moves over it.
To adjust the edge of the slider, enter a value in the Thumb Edge Radius text box. For example, if you enter ‘1’ in that box, you will get a square slider. However, if you enter ’10’ in that box, the slider will have more rounded edges.
You can select a scroll bar background as a line by using the Background Colors palette. This palette allows you to change the color of the scroll bar background, as shown in the snapshot below.
Firefox users can remove the scroll bar or its buttons with the add-on. There are three options: Hide the slider buttons, remove the scroll bar completely, or keep it hidden but with slider buttons. ..
When you’re done customizing the add-on slider, click OK at the bottom of the window. Then restart Firefox for the changes to take effect. Press Help for more information about extensions button bottom left of the NewScrollbars window.
Move the scroll bar to the left of the Firefox window
You can’t move the scroll bar to the left of the browser window in NewScrollbars, but you can fix this by editing about:config. Enter about:config in Firefox’s address bar to open the page below, and scroll to the layout.scrollbar.side setting. ..
To change the scroll bar’s position on Firefox, double-click the layout.scrollbar.side object on the window’s toolbar. In the Enter Integer Value window that opens, enter 3 and press OK button to close it. When you restart Firefox, the scroll bar will be on the left side of the window as shown below. ..
Adjust Firefox page scroll speeds with yet another smooth scrolling
There are a few add-ons that allow you to adjust the scrolling speeds of the Firefox scroll bar. One of them is Yet Another Smooth Scrolling, which allows you to configure both the mouse wheel and keyboard. Check out the Mozilla page to add this Firefox extension. Then click the Open menu button, Add-ons, Extensions and Options next to Yet Another Smooth Scrolling extension to open the window directly below. ..
The main tab in that window contains three color tabs (red, green, and blue) for you to set up alternate scrollbar speeds with. Then you can select one of those scrollbar presets from the Firefox context menu. All tabs contain four drag bars for step size, smoothness (advance), smoothness and acceleration sensitivity.
To adjust the scroll speed of the mouse wheel, select that tab and drag the Scroll Speed slider to the right or left. This is the bar that most affects scrolling speed, as it effectively increases or decreases the distance of each scroll step. So, if you drag the bar further to the right, you increase the page scrolling speed. ..
The smoothness bars don’t adjust the page scrolling speed. Dragging those bars further to the right increases scrolling smoothness. However, the acceleration sensitivity bar increases the speed of the slider when it is dragged to the right. That effectively increases the step size when you move the mouse wheel quickly.
The Keyboard tab contains the same bars as the Mouse tab. So you can adjust the scroll speeds for the keys in the same way. The changes take effect immediately, but don’t forget to select the preset color from the Firefox context menu by right-clicking on any page as below.
Add a new Scroll to Top Button to the scroll bar
To add a new button to the scroll bar of Firefox, view the extension Scroll up on this page. This adds one button to the scroll bar that you can press to quickly jump to the top or bottom of the page. If you’ve added Scroll To Top to Firefox, open a longer web page in the browser. The scroll bar contains a new button next to it as shown below.
If you are on or near the top of the page, you can press that button to jump right to the bottom of it. You can also scroll to the bottom of the page and click on it. The slider immediately jumps up again. ..
Scroll to Top – Settings tab You can choose where the Scroll to Top button appears on your web page. For example, you can choose to have it appear at the top of the scroll bar, or in a specific location on the page. ..
You can also do it by pressing the left and right arrow buttons at the same time.
Customizing the Firefox scroll bar is a great way to customize the look and feel of the slider. It allows you to change the color scheme, increase or decrease the width, configure the edges of the slider, adjust page scroll speeds, and add a convenient jump up / down button to the scroll bar.
